Good Design, Bad Design, and How to Fix it

Select two images from the Internet: one you consider to be designed well and another you consider to be poorly designed. The images may be banners, online advertisements, or reproductions of print advertisements.

Write a 350- to 700-word paper that evaluates the images you have
selected.

Explain why one image demonstrates effective design and why the other demonstrates ineffective design. Consider at least two of the following aspects of visual design:

• Color
• Contrast
• Symmetry and asymmetry
• Balance
• Alignment
• Proximity
• Visual hierarchy
• Typography

Explain how you would improve the poorly-designed image using any of the Adobe Photoshop tools you have learned about this week.

Supporting Activity: Permission

Consider the article "Copyright Basics" and the video "Protected Content: Fair Use" located on the student website.

Write a 200- to 300-word short-answer response to the following:
May someone legally use a copyrighted image without permission from the owner and without paying royalties? If so, under what circumstances?

Supporting Activity: Copyrighted Image

Consider the article "Copyright Basics" and the video "Protected Content: Fair Use" located on the student website.

Write a 200- to 300-word short-answer response to the following:

Design for the City of Kelsey, Part 1

Option 2: Print-Based Track

You are the lead designer at an advertising agency and the City of Kelsey has asked you to design and develop a poster that can be used for electronic and print publications. For the next 3 weeks, you will be working on this project. Each week, you will turn in a different deliverable. For this week, complete the following:

Select a theme that is appropriate for the current season or holiday. For example, you might choose spring, Halloween, or Independence Day.

Review the City of Kelsey website to determine the style and message of this client. A link to the City of Kelsey Virtual Organization can be found on the student website.

Create a promotional poster for the City of Kelsey. The poster will be a
.PSD file that has a canvas measuring 11 inches wide and 14 inches
tall. It should be consistent with the client's style and message and
related to the season or holiday you have selected. Practice the
principles of effective visual design when creating your poster. To
create the poster, complete the following:

  • Select a noncopyrighted photo (not from the Kelsey website) or a
photo you captured yourself that communicates the message of the
    client appropriately.
  • Save this photo your computer. Do not make any alterations.
Create a copy of the photo and save it as a separate image file. You
will be modifying this image file.
  • Optimize the image for print by using CKMY color settings and then
save the optimized image with a new file name.
  • Crop and resize the optimized image, then save that image under a
    new file name.
  • Retouch the cropped image using a correction or color adjustment
tool, then save the retouched image with a new associated file name.
  • Create a new file named postercomp1.
  • Create a new canvas sized 11 x 14 inches in the file postercomp1.
  • Create a background layer using a background color or gradient.
Place the optimized photo on a new layer.
  • Blend the transition between the background layer and the photo
layer using feathering, transparency, or blurs.
  • Add an additional noncopyrighted graphic (not a photo and not from the Kelsey site) or your own graphic you have already created on a third layer.

Write a 200- to 300-word short-answer response to the following:

What tools did you use to modify the image? How did these tools allow you to achieve the results you wanted.

like you to update the existing poster and to create a flyer to hand out to
citizens.

Part 2: New Flyer
Create a new flyer that is 8 inches wide and 5 inches tall. This new flyer should be consistent with the style of the updated poster and continue to demonstrate effective visual design.

To create the new flyer, complete the following:

  • Create a new file for the new flyer that is 8 x 5 inches.
  • Note that simply reducing the size of the image may not be visually
effective. For example, the flyer may become too busy or items may not be clearly visible. You may make modifications to compensate for the reduced size as long as the flyer remains consistent with the intended message and style.
  • Remember to view your flyer at a 100% aspect ratio because
anything larger may be deceptive and lead to poor design decisions.
Save a .PSD file smaller than 10 MB for submission. Use the word flyer
    in the file name.
