• What image of America was communicated by the innovations and buildings presented at the 1883 Chicago's World Fair? How was this image communicated?
• How and why was the art produced by the Ashcan School different from that of the Gilded Age? To what changes in social history were artists reacting?
• How is art a reflection of society? Explain with at least two examples to illustrate the relationship between art and society. These two examples may be from the text or of your own selection. Discuss the subject or theme of your selected works.

Create a timeline of 7-12 milestones in art and architecture that illustrate the transition from the Gilded Age to the era of the Ashcan artists. Each work selected for your milestones must be accompanied by a 90- to 175-word description addressing the following:
• How is your milestone reflective of society of the late 19th century?
• How is your selected work representative of either the Gilded Age, or the early modernist era as embodied by the Ashcan School?
• What is the subject or theme of your selected work? How is this theme representative of American society?

Choose three to four of the following artists for an exhibition centered on the organizing theme, Trends in Early Twentieth Century American Art:

American Art Before and After World War II

For your Week 3 Assignment, choose one of the options listed below.

Option A
Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper on American art before and after World War II.
Include an examination of the artwork of three artists total. Select two artists who worked during the Great Depression and one Abstract Expressionist artist. Include discussion of the following in your paper:

• At least one example of art from each artist with a description of the subject and style of the work.
• An examination of the purpose of artwork created during the Great Depression. Were your examples used as tools for social reform? What other types of messaging was present in works from the 1930s?
• A description of how Abstract Expressionism emerged in post-World War II America and how it differed from the art work of the 1930s.
• A description of the style of your Abstract Expressionist artist and why he or she was interested in this style of abstraction; was there a "meaning" to their work?

Art of the 1950s and the 1960s Presentation

Resources: Review your Week 4 readings and videos.
Choose one of the following themes for a presentation on your Week 4 content:

• Changing Times: Proto-Pop and The Beats (must include either
Robert Rauschenberg or Jasper Johns)
• Andy Warhol and Pop Art (focus on Warhol OR Warhol and other
Pop artists)
• Protest Art (You may choose to focus on Civil Rights, the Vietnam
War, or both)

Create a 10- to 12-sllde presentation (including a title and reference slide) on your selected theme that includes the following:

• 100- to 250-word speaker notes for each of your content slides that summarize the main points listed on the slide (you will have a minimum of 8 to 10 content slides which excludes the title and reference slides).
• A description and analysis of four to six artworks related to your selected theme (include an image of each artwork).
• A description of the subject of each artwork; what was the subject depicted by the artist?
• An examination of how this type of art developed; why did artists choose these subjects? To what social or cultural events were artists responding?
• A description of the materials, media, or techniques used by the artists; why did the artist use these materials or techniques? What is the overall effect of the artwork?

• Beginning with the Gilded Age, how has art been a reflection of society? Describe and examine at least three examples you have encountered or examined in this course to support your conclusions.
• How art, in the context of the social justice movements of the 20th century, challenged and shaped American society.
• The role of diversity in the development of the arts and how it changed throughout the last century in the United States.
• Your opinion on the role of art today; how does it continue to remain relevant to our lives? How could it change or develop to become more relevant to our lives?
